Drivers on the Coquihalla are being warned of a significant snowfall event this weekend, with up to 40 cm of snow possible by Sunday evening.
The snow is expected to start tonight, and Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the Hope to Merritt section of the highway as well as the Okanagan Connector because of the snow that is expected.
Drivers are being urged to delay any travel plans until early next week, when the snow is expected to ease on the mountain passes.
“Snow will continue through the day on Saturday as the system pushes across British Columbia,” said Environment Canada. “In the wake of the system on Sunday, intense bursts of flurries will add further accumulations. Gusty winds will reduce visibility in blowing snow, particularly on Sunday.”
While the Coquihalla between Hope to Merritt could see 30 to 40 cm of snow, the Okanagan Connector, Rogers Pass on Highway 1, and both Allison Pass and Kootenay Pass on Highway 3 could see 15 to 25 cm by Sunday night.
“Snow levels will be unseasonably low, hovering between 1100 and 1400 metres,” noted Environment Canada. “The transition from rain at the lower elevations to heavy snow near the passes will make for adverse winter driving conditions.”
A reminder as well, Environment Canada notes winter tires are mandatory on the mountain highways until April 30.
