Just like the Presidential race, down-ballot campaigns have been changed by the coronavirus pandemic. What once consisted of parades and fundraisers has now gone mostly virtual.
Congressional candidate Mary Miller says her campaign for the November election is no different, but she says some things have been the same.
“Well, it has been challenging, and we’ve had to adjust,” Miller explained. “I did do several parades, on the Fourth of July, did a parade today. So there are places that are having events. I have done a lot of Zoom meetings, which aren’t ideal (as) I like to meet people face-to-face, but we’re adapting.”
Miller made her first stop in Danville since winning the Republican primary in March over five other candidates, attending a Vermilion County Republican fundraiser Saturday at Turtle Run.
She says many people from her district believe that the state and national governments should prioritize reopening, in order to get the economy back on track.
During the primary, Miller was the most aligned with President Donald Trump, often wearing Trump-themed merchandise including a Trump purse. Despite the President’s lagging poll numbers and increasing vulnerability, she says she believes a “silent majority” of voters will support him.
“First of all, he’s the only one on stage because Basement Biden is hiding,” she said. “He’s the one that’s taking all the attack. When they do the polls, when one of the last one was released, only 20 percent of the people who were polled were Republicans, so they have their way of skewing it. And I feel certain that we have a silent majority that’s going to come out for him.”
Miller recently returned from a trip to Washington, D.C. She adds that there are many “true patriots” in Congress who support the President’s agenda.
