The major accessibility boardwalk at Dunes Beach in Prince Edward County is moving ahead again this year.
High water levels at the beach three years ago, that saw people struggling through waist-deep water to get to the beach, prompted the Friends of Sandbanks to begin the project.
Vice-Chair John Brebner tells Quinte News, “There have been instances where, at the Dunes Beach, when people have had medical emergencies, it’s been very difficult to get in with a stretcher. Our idea was to have a boardwalk.”
” … that would be above the high water level that we experienced in 2018 and 2019 and make it accessible for people in wheelchairs and make it easy for people in distress to have gurneys brought in.”
Brebner added, “When you have something so valuable that allows accessibility, it’s a wonderful project.”
“We’ve obviously had issues with the corona pandemic and getting labour and everything in there. There are pieces that are still coming. The next section has been ordered and we expect it to be coming in.”
Brebner expects the project to be completed in 2022 at a full cost of $60,000.
The money has been donated. A major donation of $25,000 last year came from Sandbanks River Country.
