City of Decatur Fire Hydrants to be Flushed in April
Decatur, IL – Decatur Fire Department and Water Department crews will be flushing and flow testing approximately 1,200 city fire hydrants during the month of April.
When possible, this process will occur Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This testing is necessary to keep the city’s nearly 4,500 fire hydrants ready for use. Fire crews will be checking for operational deficiencies, lubricating discharge outlets, and recording flow data. This provides essential information for calculating the water available to support fire suppression.
Temporary discoloration of water may occur in areas where hydrants are being tested. No safety or health issues are associated with discolored water from this testing, but residents should ensure their water is clear before doing laundry, as clothing could be stained. If a stain occurs, do not bleach or dry stained clothing as the stain could be set permanently. Stains can be removed by rewashing the wet clothing with a rust-removing compound.
A map of the areas being tested will soon be available on the City of Decatur website at www.decaturil.gov/299/Maps. The Decatur Fire and Water Departments appreciate the public’s cooperation during this process. Please contact the Decatur Fire Department at 217-424-2811 with questions.
