There is new lighting in and around three snowsheds along Highway 1, east of Revelstoke.
The province says the project replaced the halogen lights with energy efficient LED lights inside the Jack McDonald, Twin, and Lanark snowsheds.
“The new lights will measure the ambient daytime lighting outside and replicates it inside the snowsheds,” the Ministry said in a statement. “This process will provide consistent lighting for drivers moving in and out of the snowsheds, improving visibility and reducing the potential for distractions.”
In all 576 LED lights were installed across the 1.8 km stretch of highway from the west entrance of the Jack McDonald Snowshed to the east entrance of the Lanark Snowshed by Martech Electrical Systems of Castlegar, at a cost of $7.15 million.
The work also included the installation of 18 light poles both at the approaches and between the three snowsheds. It also included the construction of a building on the southern wall of the Twin snowshed to control the lighting system.
In all, more than 11,000 vehicles travel this section of Highway 1 daily in the summer months, according to the Ministry.
