The city is creating a hot spot needle map to help coordinate the pick up of discarded needles in Kamloops.
Residents and business owners are being asked to let the city know when and where these used needles are being found.
NSBIA Executive Director Jeremy Heighton hopes to have some data in the next couple of weeks.
“We’re working with service providers around the city and the city of Kamloops to understand what’s happening in regards to discarded needles, to needles being picked up,” he said.
“It is to streamline that service to ensure that we’re not duplicating efforts, and to even verify if where we currently have needle collection bins they are in the right spot.”
The NSBIA has an online form on their website that people can fill out.
“People can go there and tell us what they find, when they find it, and how frequently they find it,” Heighton added. “What we’ll do is, we’ll take that information into our partner meetings and the city’s GIS is going to be mapping it all for us.”
“The goal here is to validate what we know or invalidate it in some cases.”
Heighton notes the map will not be made public, saying they feel there is no public value is doing so.
