The Environment Minister says there’s a number of rule changes for slash-burning newly in place for this fall.
George Heyman says revisions to the Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation focus on the nature of the air shed, proximity to populated areas and several other conditions.
“There are also requirements to look for alternative forms of using or disposing of the wood waste before it’s burned. So those are all important initial steps to reduce both the emissions from wood burning and the harmful impacts to air quality.”
The government has also has divided the province into zones for high, medium and low smoke sensitivity, with the strictest burning requirements in areas around communities.
