Police say a truck that flew through Westsyde with a man standing on the back had been stolen days earlier.
Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the man on the back was the truck’s owner, and says he caught up with the thieves in Brock after a friend had spotted the truck driving on the Halston Connector.
When they tried to drive off, Shelkie says the owner jumped on the back and hung on, despite the truck hitting a power pole, hitting three other vehicles and reaching speeds of over 100 kilometres per hour, while running red lights on Westsyde Road and swerving towards oncoming traffic.
“I just want to remind people that if they do see a crime happening, or they do see a stolen vehicle, that we strongly recommend they contact the police. There could’ve been much more serious injuries, to both the people inside, to the people on the stolen vehicle and to other motorists or even pedestrians out there. Luckily none of that happened, but if the police had been contacted it could’ve been dealt with in a much different manner,” Shelkie says.
The truck later crashed in a field before catching fire.
Witnesses says the truck slammed through a fence at Jamieson Creek Ranch, near Clarke Road, and say the man standing on the back was whipping the cab of the truck with a metal chain.
“They almost hit us at the corner of Harrington and Westsyde. I had just picked my son up from pre-school. So nuts. Like out of a movie,” witness Joleen Anderson tells NL News.
The owner hanging on the back was not hurt, while the two occupants inside were arrested and taken to hospital.
